Course Description

This course teaches students the basic joinery skills and safe practices used in a traditional carpentry sector. Topics include construction jobsite safety, safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools, construction math, and construction drawings. Students will learn and practice material handling through the hands-on construction of small project(s) utilizing traditional wood joinery techniques. This course is ideal for those honing their construction tools and techniques, and/or considering a career in carpentry or furniture making. Successful students will gain the basic skills needed to continue training in the traditional carpentry sector.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  • Identify and develop safety-based competency with basic hand and power tools and their proper uses in the construction trade.
  • Understand and develop competency applying basic construction math and geometry in the execution of a traditional woodworking project.
  • Recognize and identify basic construction blueprint drawing terms, components, and symbols. Interpret and apply two dimensional drawings to three dimensional projects.
  • Choose appropriate materials-handling equipment for the task, recognize hazards and follow safety procedures required for materials handling.
  • Interpret information and instructions presented in both verbal and written form in order  to execute a project from start to completion.
