Course Description

Learn how to develop and design your own personal greenhouse. This course covers greenhouse facilities planning and equipment selection and will cover topics such as types of greenhouses, location factors, materials, glazing selection, calculation of heating/cooling requirements, lighting, benches, and energy conservation. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of material selection, facilities planning, equipment need selection, and appropriate calculations. This is a parallel course to HOR-130 and offered in a curriculum environment.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate a site for greenhouse placement.
  • Evaluate different greenhouse designs for appropriateness to desired function.
  • Apply critical and creative thinking skills to solving management problems in the greenhouse environment.
  • Select appropriate tools and technology to accomplish tasks specific to greenhouse design and installation.
  • Estimate materials costs for various design projects.
  • Source materials for greenhouse construction.
  • Construct and maintain various aspects of greenhouses and their associated systems, including irrigation and ventilation.
