Course Description

This course offers a hands-on introduction to the tools of the trade. Students will learn various techniques required in residential construction, and how to safely operate the many hand and power tools utilized in the construction sector. Basic hand tools include hammer, tape measure, speed square, and chisel, among others. Power tools include circular and reciprocating saws, drills and drivers, planers, nail guns, compound miter and table saws. In addition to tool safety, students will understand the applications for which each tool is designed. Successful students will be able to identify and understand safe operation of various hand and power tools used in residential construction.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Learn and identify basic hand tools and power tools used in residential construction, and understand the applications for which they are designed.
  • Learn and understand safe operation of basic hand tools.
  • Learn and understand safe operation of power tools.

Notes

Closed toe shoes are required.

Other relevant personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.) will be provided by the College.
