Course Description

This course provides employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed individuals. The course framework will address each of the six core HRD components: 1) assessment of an individual's assets and limitations, 2) development of a positive self-concept, 3) development of employability skills, 4) development of  communication skills, 5) development of problem-solving skills, and 6) awareness of the Impact of information technology in the workplace.

Learner Outcomes

Students will:

  • Understand the importance of self-confidence and self-image in building a positive attitude toward employment.
  • Describe various types of vocations and the entry requirements for each.
  • Make a tentative career choice and understand the complexity of choosing a career from the various types of occupations.
  • Complete job applications correctly and handle interviews effectively.
  • Understand employer expectations and the work ethic.
  • Understand and make ethical personal decisions.
  • Select several tactics for creating a favorable impression on a present or future employer.
  • Know how and why to be a team player and understand their employer and co-worker obligations.
  • Define and understand the meaning of wellness and stress, and the importance of a drug and alcohol- free life and workplace.
  • List several factors that contribute to long term employment including principles for resolving conflicts with managers or co-workers.
  • Understand the importance of technology in the workplace.

Course materials such as handouts will be provided by the instructor.

This course is eligible for the state's Human Resources Development Fee Waiver. Completion of the HRD Fee Waiver application is required. Eligibility includes individuals who are unemployed or underemployed, eligible for the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, and/or earn wages at or below 200% of the current Federal Poverty Guidelines.
