Course Description

Are you financially fit to accomplish what you want to achieve in life; professionally and personally? When our financial situation is unhealthy and unstable the impact is felt in every area of our lives. We have the power to take control of our finances, and redefine and reshape our wealth. The goal of this course is to help you examine your thoughts around money, develop a better relationship with money, and give you tools to help you become financially fit such as budgeting tools and guidelines for saving and investing.

Learner Outcomes

Student will:

  • Identify and explore different ways they relate to and think about money that might being preventing them rom achieving financial fitness .
  • Discover and understand the underlying factors that impact  financial decision making.
  • Learn some basic fundamentals about budgeting, saving, credit, and debt reduction.
  • Learn about and use financial tools and techniques around budgeting, saving, and credit/debt.
  • Understand and be able to explain the importance of insurance.
  • Learn about and describe the different types of insurance.
  • Discuss the basics of investing.
  • Summarize the different investment securities.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills around finance to create a plan of action for achieving their goals and changing thoughts and behaviors.
  • Briefly discuss additional financial topics including retirement, taxes, investing, and financing educational goals.
  • Discuss the importance of estate planning.
  • Learn about and be able to explain the basics of wills, joint ownership, trusts, and gifts.
     

Notes

Students should have a college or personal email account and an external storage device to save any coursework (USB drive).

Required Textbook/Workbook: Financially Fit workbook (included in the cost of the course and will be distributed by the instructor on the first day/night of class for traditional classes. Students in online classes must contact the program director to request in-person pickup or receipt via U.S. Postal Service).

This course is eligible for the state's Human Resources Development Fee Waiver. Completion of the HRD Fee Waiver application is required. Eligibility includes individuals who are unemployed or underemployed, eligible for the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, and/or earn wages at or below 200% of the current Federal Poverty Guidelines.
