Course Description

This course prepares students for the Class A Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), which is a prerequisite to earning a Commercial Driver License (CDL). Emphasis is placed on introduction to commercial driver licensing standards, medical requirements, driver disqualifications, driving safely, transporting cargo safely, air brakes and combination vehicles. Instruction includes general theory in the classroom, providing knowledge of safe driving concepts specific to commercial motor vehicles, an understanding of how to transport cargo safely, how an air brake system works and concepts of how to use them, and basic principles of operating truck/trailer combinations.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  • Understand commercial driver licensing standards.
  • Read, interpret, diagnose, and take appropriate action upon information provided by vehicle control systems and instruments.
  • Understand how to operate commercial motor vehicles in a safe, efficient and controlled manner.
  • Understand safe driving practices using visual observations; managing and adjusting vehicle speed, distances, and separation in various terrain and highway conditions.
  •  identifying potential driving hazards; and performing defensive and evasive actions.
  • Understand transporting cargo safely in regards to cargo securement and weight distribution.
  • Identify basic air brake system parts and understand how the air brake system works.
  • Understand how combination vehicles couple/uncouple and specific information on their driving characteristics.

Notes

Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge gained to successfully sit for the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Class “A” Learner Permit exam.

To enroll in this course, a valid NC Driver's License is required.
