Course Description

This course is designated to provide entry-level education and training to perform routine rehabilitation tasks and an overview of what the field of rehabilitation therapy entails. This course includes fundamental topics such as an overview of the rehabilitation profession, the role of a rehabilitation technician, introduction to patient care, infection control, standard precaution, facility cleanliness, and legal issues in healthcare. This course further allows the students to explore the topics such as introduction to human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, patient care related elements such as patient positioning, range of motion, bed mobility, exercises, gait, assistive devices, wheelchair, specialty topics, and associated career opportunities. Rehabilitation Technicians are not required to be licensed by the state of NC but must work under the supervision of a licensed clinician.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completions of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the role of the Rehabilitation Technician, Rehabilitation profession, and other health professionals in multiple rehabilitation settings.
  • Demonstrate proper application of rehabilitation and medical terminology.
  • Discuss and demonstrate patient care, infection control, standard precautions, facility cleanliness, and legal issues in healthcare. 
  • Display a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as common diseases or conditions seen in rehabilitation.
  • Describe and demonstrate patient care related elements such as patient positioning, range of motion, bed mobility, exercises, gait, assistive devices, and wheelchairs. 
  • Demonstrate safe functional mobility and modality set-up skills when assisting the rehabilitation professional.
  • Discuss the importance of documentation and the medical record.
  • Describe laws and regulations that apply to the Rehabilitation settings.

Notes

Every student is expected to have access to a computer, high speed internet, Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013, and Adobe Acrobat Reader, and comfortable laboratory clothing to allow physical movement.
