Course Description

The successful completion of the Notary Public class will be the first step toward qualifying for an initial NC Notary Public Commission or for a re-commission. For additional qualification on being commissioned as a Notary, contact the NC Department of the Secretary of State.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the process of becoming a Notary Public, a notary's role, how to get started, and maintain the notary commission.
  • Describe terms, recommission process, change of name or location, commission termination and enforcement, and more.
  • Be familiar with the Notary Public powers, limitations and requirements, and fees.
  • Identify and describe the necessary elements of the notarial act.
  • Perform a notarial act.
  • Know the notarization requirements, disqualifying circumstances, order of multiple notarial acts, authentication and more.
  • Identify general requirements, recognize basic forms, and other certificates.
  • Apply for the Notary Public Commission.

Notes

Requirements for this class include:

  • State or Federal issued photo I.D.
  • at least 18 years old
  • pass a criminal background check
  • have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED or HiSET)
  • live or work in North Carolina
  • read and write English

You will need to bring your State or Federal issued photo I.D. to the first class.
