Course Description

This course provides a knowledge of the operation of wastewater treatment systems. Students will learn about mechanical and maintenance requirements, activated sludge, solids disposal, lab procedures, wastewater plant security, health & safety, budget & finance, public relations, laws & regulations, etc. This course prepares students for the Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission (WPCSOCC) examination.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of the course students will:

  • Be prepared to demonstrate understanding of various treatments, laws and regulations by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and the Division of Water Resources (DWR) to serve as a Wastewater System Operator Grade 3 and/or 4.
  • Be knowledgeable in the practices of NCDEQ and DWR to include disinfection and disposal of sludge, sampling, industrial pretreatment, health and safety, public relations, wastewater plant security, etc.
  • Be eligible to sit for NCDEQ’s WPCSOCC examination.

Prerequisites

Wastewater Operator II and a working knowledge of algebra and geometry
