Course Description

This course uses a language-structure approach to present the terminology and vocabulary that will be encountered in medical office settings. Topics include word parts that relate to systemic components, conditions, pathology, and disorder remediation in approximately one-half of the systems of the human body. Upon completion, students should be able to relate words to systems, pluralize, define, pronounce, and construct sentences with the included terms. Completed in a curriculum environment, this is a parallel course offered with OST-141.

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe the fundamental elements that are used to build medical words; including prefixes, root words, and suffixes.
  • Define both medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems.
  • Identify common diseases and disorders of all body systems.
  • Construct, spell, and pronounce medical words associated with all body systems.
  • Relate medical terms to the anatomy and physiology of all body systems.
